The mayor of Oslo - A short presentation

Fabian Stang is the mayor of Oslo.

The mayor heads the City Council and is the highest ranking representative of the city. On behalf of the city, the mayor is given the mandate to invite and greet welcome national and international delegations and individuals, representing organizations and institutions on different levels, such as political, cultural, social or economical.

Since Oslo is the capital of Norway, the mayor also plays an important part in connection with state visits. The mayor is representing the city when heads of states are visiting Oslo, and some times the city is giving a reception of honour in the City Hall.

The city of Oslo has a system of local parliamentary government with an executive board which implements municipal policy. This differs from all other Norwegian municipalities, except the city of Bergen, which are governed in the traditional manner by the Board of Aldermen of the local municipal council. Concequently, the mayor of Oslo may be compared to carry out duties and tasks similar to a president on a national level.
